Rudolf Pätzold

Ernst Rudolf Pätzold (born March 18, 1921 in Dresden ; † June 16, 2006 ibid) was a German engineer and ornithologist .

Life

Pätzold was born the second of four children to a railroad worker. As a schoolboy he founded an association for bird lovers in 1934. He first became a bricklayer, later an engineer for renovation . From 1953 to 1956 he studied agriculture in Dresden-Pillnitz. However, he did not work long as an agronomist, he soon switched from agriculture to water management. Until his retirement in 1986 he worked as a project engineer and design manager in river, amelioration and dam construction.

Pätzold also worked as an ornithologist. From 1953 to 1970 he was Gerhard Creutz's successor and head of the ornithology department in Dresden. He published several specialist books, especially on the larks ; He was the author of the volumes Feldlerche (323), Heidelerche und Haubenlerche (440), Rotkehlchen (520), Wasserpieper (565), Ohrlerche (586), Baumpieper (601) and Die Lerchen der Welt in the Neue Brehm-Bücherei (617). His books achieved up to four editions.

Pätzold lived with his wife Charlotte on the estate of Haus Sorgefrei in Oberlößnitz until April 1996 .

He died shortly after his 85th birthday after a long illness.
