Califon is a city in Hunterdon County in New Jersey in the United States .

The city received the name Calfion in the 1920s, a later abbreviation because the settlement was originally called California.

Califon was a train station on the High Bridge Branch of the Central Railroad of New Jersey . After the sale of the Central Railroad to Conrail in 1976, the rail connection was abandoned. Today the Columbia Trail, a bike path , runs on the former railway line. According to the last census in 2007, there were 1,033 people in California.
