The beam drills ( calopus serraticornis ) is a beetle from the family of oedemeridae (Oedemeridae). It is the only European representative of the genus Calopus, which consists of two species .

features

With a length of around 1.8 to 2.5 centimeters, bar borers are the largest longhorn beetles in Central Europe. They are of a shiny dark reddish brown color. The head and pronotum are relatively small. The eyes are black. The segmented antennae are at least half the length of the body. The silver-haired elytra cover the entire abdomen and have longitudinal ribs.

Occurrence and endangerment

Beam drills are found all over Europe with the exception of the Benelux countries, Denmark, Iceland, the British Isles and Portugal. Its eastern expansion extends to Siberia.

In deciduous and coniferous forests, log drills occur at altitudes up to the tree line, but they can also be found in parks and gardens, mostly in rotten wood.

While Jiri Zahradník (1985) and Möller et al. (2006) speak of no endangerment, Boris Büche and Georg Möller classified it as " endangered " for the whole of Germany in the Berlin Red List of 2004 .

Way of life

The elongated eggs are cemented together with threads. The larvae develop over several years in the old wood of deciduous and coniferous trees. The beetle shows up in the first warm days of spring. It is nocturnal and flies to light.

Scientific name

The generic name Calopus comes from the Greek kalós and pōūs , which means beautiful foot. The species name serraticornis comes from Latin and means saw horn .
