Calshot Harbor is the only port on the island of Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic Ocean and one of only four ports in total in the British overseas territory of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha . The port opened in 1967 and is located in the capital, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas .
The harbor is named after the village of Calshot in Hampshire , England . All inhabitants of the island were moved here in October 1961 after a volcanic eruption on the northern flank of the shield volcano Queen Mary's Peak .
meaning
The port is of outstanding importance for the island, as it does not have an airport and can therefore only be reached by ship. Tristan da Cunha's economy is largely dependent on fishing . The export (including to the European Union ) of a species of lobster ( Jasus tristani ) that can only be found on the island is handled via Calshot Harbor. Due to its shallow depth and limited dimensions, the port cannot accommodate ocean-going ships. These must anchor off the coast; the transport of goods and passengers between the port and the anchored ships is carried out by boats.
expansion
In 2008 and 2009 the port was renovated. The construction of a new port was planned for 2014. The idea was discarded due to the cost ( £ 21 million ). A comprehensive renovation of Calshot Harbor took place in early 2017.
