Calvin Thornton Durgin (born January 7, 1893 in Palmyra , New Jersey , † March 25, 1965 in New York , New York ) was an admiral in the United States Navy during World War II .

Life

Calvin T. Durgin was born on January 7, 1893 in Palmyra, New Jersey, to Francis Durgin and Sara Boal. After attending school in his birthplace, he was accepted into the United States Naval Academy in 1912 . After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1916, he married Myrtle W. Fest, with whom he later had three children. As a young ensign, Durgin served on the battleship USS Illinois .

After the end of Operation Torch , he was part of a commission investigating the possible uses of escort aircraft carriers . His first major command after promotion to Rear Admiral in February 1943 was Task Group 27.7 during Operation Dragoon in August 1944. He was then transferred to the Pacific , where he was in command of Task Group 77.4 aboard USS Makin Island (CVE- 93) was responsible for securing the landing in the Gulf of Lingayen in January 1945 . As a task group commander, he also took part in the battle for Iwo Jima and Okinawa . After the end of the war he was employed in several land commands, from May 1, 1949 in the rank of Vice Admiral . The official promotion to this rank took place only with his retirement from active service on September 1, 1951. Before that, he was from March to September 1951 director of the Board of Inspection and Survey .

Calvin T. Durgan died on March 25, 1965 while visiting the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
