Cambay ( Kambay , Khambhat , Khanbayat ) was a princely state of British India on the Gulf of Khambhat in what is now the state of Gujarat . Its capital was the place Cambay ( Khambhat ). The principality was founded around 1730 by the penultimate Nawab of the Mughal Empire for Gujarat, Mirza Ja'far Mu'min Khan I, a Shiite Muslim .
Cambay was a British protectorate from 1802 to 1947 and in 1891 had an area of 1015 km² and 90,000 inhabitants. On June 10, 1948, it was annexed to India and incorporated into the state of Bombay . Cambay has been part of the state of Gujarat since 1960 .
