Camden, Town Hall

Camden was created in 1818 under the name Dover by William Moore, then it was named in Newcomb after Senator George Newcomb . Incorporated in 1832, the village finally got its name from Camden, South Carolina .

The narrator Sherwood Anderson was born in Camden in 1876 when the town had little more than 700 residents.

In 1880, EM Kennedy founded a local newspaper, the Camden Gazette , a Thursday weekly. The newspaper was the only newspaper in the county. However, it was published by CM Hane in 1884. Founded in 1902 by WE McChristie, Preble County News was published from 1906 by Ray R. Simpson, but after it was sold to Earl H. Irvin, the paper moved to Eaton in the same year .

In 1958 Ruth Bandtel Neff (1908–1998) completed her master's thesis on the history of the place; she herself worked as a primary school teacher in Camden until 1969.
