Cameron Bay (ghost town)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cameron Bay is located near Port Radium on the map

Cameron Bay is a ghost town on the east bank of Great Bear Lake (McTavish Arm) in the Déline District of the Sahtu Region of Canada's Northwest Territories .

As part of the search for silver and radium deposits , Cameron Bay was settled for the first time and probably named after the geologist Professor Allan Cameron. In the end, four mines were established, only one of which, the Eldorado Mine near Port Radium , actually produced. Cameron Bay in its short heyday included small hotels, restaurants, a police station, a branch of the Hudson's Bay Company, and a radio station. The fall in radium prices led to the fact that the settlement , which could only be reached by seaplane, died out in 1939 . During the 1940s and 1950s , individual buildings were still inhabited by indigenous people. In 1960 a fisherman's hut was built, but it burned down at the beginning of the 21st century .

Today there are huts from Branson's Outpost , a base for anglers.
