Camillo Filippi (* approx. 1500 in Ferrara ; † 1574 ibid) was an Italian mannerist painter.

biography

Camillo is the son of Sebastiano Filippi the Elder , who also works as a painter, and began his career as a student of Battista Dossi and Girolamo da Carpi . Together with the latter, he worked on the decoration of the Delizia de Voghiera. During this project he met other artists like Biagio Pupini and Garofalo , who had a strong influence on the young Filippi.

Filippi's youthful style comes very close to that of his masters, that is, he is characterized by a strong Raphaelism that is sometimes taken too literally. He continued his collaboration with Girolamo on various decorative works, such as in the Castello Estense in Ferrara (1541 and 1548), in the Residenza della Montagnola in Copparo (1545, destroyed) or later in the Palazzo Fabiani Freguglia in Ferrara.

Together with Garofalo, he created the designs for the tapestries in Ferrara Cathedral , which depict scenes from the life of Saints George and Maurelius . All these years his style has been a bit washed out and monotonous. In the closing stages of his career, however, his art saw a revival through the influence of his son Sebastiano Filippi , known as Bastianino , an artist who was far more talented than his own father. The latter's return from Rome in 1553 meant a renewal of the references previously used by his father, who from now on was receptive to the work of artists such as Michelangelo , Giorgio Vasari , Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta and Francesco Salviati , whose works he thanks during a stay in Bologna .

Camillo has another son, Cesare Filippi , who worked as a painter and who until recently was assigned the predella with the beheading of Pope Sixtus II , which was part of the altarpiece of San Barnaba, a work by his father.
