The Caminho-de-Ferro de São Tomé (CFST) was an 18-kilometer narrow-gauge railway on the island of São Tomé from São Tomé via Trindade to Milagrosa with a track width of initially 600 mm and later 750 mm.

construction

Construction began in October 1908 but was very slow, mainly due to the lack of manpower on the island, a problem that was also found in the plantations called Roças at the time. Two steam locomotives with a gauge of 600 mm were used during the construction work: a Krauss and a 3¼ tonne 0-4-0T - Decauville -N ° -478 built in 1906 for the Ministère de la Marine et d'Outremer . These were offered for resale in June 1914.

Later a 10 t 0-4-0T Henschel (No. 8810/1908) with a 750 mm track width was delivered together with around 24 wagons from A. Koppel , Berlin . Sternberg & Co. from Frankfurt am Main delivered an inspection vehicle with a 3 HP engine.

business

On October 26, 1912, the Direcção de Portos and the Viação de S. Tomé were founded by decree to manage the railway. The line was inaugurated on June 3, 1913 and opened to traffic the next day from S. Tomé to Trinidade. The section to Cruzeiro de Trinidade was only opened on August 1, 1913. On July 1, 1924, a 4 km extension was opened between Cruzeiro de Trinidade and Milagrosa for a number of Roças in this area. The railway line was operated according to schedule for only 13 years until December 1926 and finally shut down in 1931. Until the 1950s, part of the rail network was still used for special trips.
