Cammeraygal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cammeraygal are an Aboriginal tribe who lived in the North Sydney Council in Sydney , Australia.

The Cammeraygals, who are an Aboriginal Eora , lived northwest of the ports of Berry Island, Kirribilli , Cammeray, Neutral Bay and Middle Harbor, while others claim they were based in Manly , a suburb of Sydney. When the British fleet landed in Sydney in 1788, they evicted and murdered numerous Cammeraygals. In 1860 the Cammeraygal habitat was restricted to a reservation. The north coast of Sydney was the first place the British took over and was also the route taken by the British colonizers in Australia and the indigenous people.

Today, tombs and rock drawings are a reminder of the culture and life of these Aborigines. The name "Cammeraygal" has been added to the coat of arms of the North Sydney Council as a lettering. The Aboriginal Bennelong , who first traveled to Europe and was the mediator of the British and Eoras, was descended from the Cammeraygal people.
