Kirribilli

Kirribilli is a district of Sydney ( Australia ) in the local administrative area of North Sydney . He is close to the Harbor Bridge ( Sydney Harbor Bridge ) on the northern shore of Port Jackson ( Sydney Harbor ). On the opposite side of the harbor are the Opera House ( Sydney Opera House ) and the Botanical Gardens ( Royal Botanic Gardens ). It also borders the Milson's Point district with which it shares zip code 2061.

The name of the district is derived from the word Kiarabilli of the formerly local Aboriginal tribe and means something like "a good place to fish". Kirribilli is one of the oldest districts in Sydney and even Australia. Historically, the Kirribilli area was part of a land donation to James Milson after whom the neighboring district of Milson's Point was named.

Kirribilli is home to the Kirribilli House , the residence of the Australian Prime Minister , and the Admiralty House , the residence of the Governor General of Australia, if they are in Sydney. The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron is also based in Kirribilli .

According to the 2011 census, 3,668 people live in this district on an area of 0.5 km², 51% of whom were born in Australia. The residents can be assigned to the established middle-class social classes, which is often reflected in the architecture of the residential buildings. The atmosphere of the district can also be characterized as calm and almost village-like, although it is located in the center of Sydney. This may be because it is away from major roads and three-quarters of the way is surrounded by water.

The Kirribilli Neighborhood Center is an important engine for the social and cultural life of the district. Various courses and other different activities are offered there. In addition, it organizes the Kirribilli Markets and the Kirribilli Arts and Design Markets , which alternate between artists and small merchants' markets every two weeks.

There are also two schools in Kirribilli, the St Aloysius' College which is attended exclusively by boys and the Loreto Kirribilli which only girls go.

In terms of transport, Kirribilli is well connected to the rest of Sydney. There are two landing stages , Kirribilli Wharf and Beulah Street Wharf (pronounced Bjula), which are served by regular ferry services. The closest CityRail station is Milson's Point, from where you can take the S-Bahn to all parts of Sydney. A bus route that loops through the district also connects with the rest of Sydney. By car, there is a junction behind the harbor bridge on the Bradfield Highway , which leads to the north, the city center and the south of Sydney.
