The Campo Santa Margherita , also Santa Margerita , is the second largest square on the right of the Grand Canal in Venice after the Campo San Polo . It is located in the Dorsoduro sestiere and is one of the few centers of student life. The square was named after St. Margaret of Antioch . The parish church was profaned under Napoleon , today it serves as the auditorium of the university . The campanile or bell tower was partially demolished in 1880 due to the risk of collapse, so that only a stump remains today.

The buildings of the square, which was once on the outskirts of the city, were and are of relatively little art-historical importance. Nevertheless, a Gothic, one-story building stands out, as well as the neighboring Palazzetto Corner Foscolo from the 13th century, which offers an open courtyard with a flight of stairs. However, the building has been restored many times, so that it sometimes corresponds less to the structure of the late Middle Ages than to the later ideas of this epoch. There is still a portal of the destroyed Palazzo Renier in Calle Renier.

The baroque Scuola Grande dei Carmini , designed by Francesco Cantello and perfected by Baldassare Longhena , is located at the west end of the square by the somewhat hidden Carmini Church, called the "Carmini" by the Venetians. This is a huge building from the 17th century, the interior decoration including the paintings by Tiepolo has been preserved.

Originally the Rio della Scoazzera , which was filled in in 1863, formed the southern edge of the square. This gives the Scuola dei Varoteri from 1725, where the Consiglio di Quartiere 2 holds its meetings today , an unintended central position in the enlarged square. The former Rio Terà Canal ("terà" always refers to a flooded Rio), which made the connection to the Rio di San Barnabà , was filled in in 1863. This is reminiscent of a house inscription with the words: "Colmato il Rio / A maggior ampiezza / MDCCCLXIII / Podestà Bembo".

Other guild buildings are the Scuola del Santissimo Sacramento next to the Margaret Church , right next to the Campanile, and the Scuola de San Vettor e Santa Margarita .
