The original building where the contract was signed was demolished in 1900. In 1923 the City of Los Angeles provided funds to purchase the property. A replica of the building was built in 1950. The construction of the Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival style building was suggested by Irene T. Lindsay, chairwoman of the San Fernando Valley Historical Society . Later, when the underground station on the Los Angeles Metro Rail's Red Line was expanded, the foundations of the original building were partially exposed. The unexposed parts are under the pavement, their location is marked decoratively.

The collection includes pieces from the Spanish missionary period (1769–1833) to the time of the American Civil War (1861–1865), in particular the deed of the Treaty of Cahuenga and artifacts from the possession of Frémont and Pico.
