The Roman Catholic parish church of Bad Traunstein is located in the market town of Bad Traunstein in the Zwettl district in Lower Austria . The parish church consecrated to St. George belongs to the Deanery Zwettl of the diocese of St. Pölten . The church is a listed building .

history

A fiefdom of the Anschau rulership was split up in 1290 as a church fief between the Dachsbergers at Rappottenstein Castle and the Starhemberger at Albrechtsberg Castle . In 1909 the elevation to the parish took place, which was under the patronage of the owners of Rappottenstein until 1971.

From 1959 to 1962 a new church was built using older components under the artist and pastor Josef Elter according to the plans of the architect Ladislaus Hruska .

architecture

The church stands in a dominant position opposite the rectory in Bad Traunstein and is surrounded by a cemetery and a wall.

The late Gothic tower with three-pass windows and an attached modern bell storey is on the south-west side. On the south-east side in the line of the tower - probably the modern hall church with the southern main portal in between - stands the essentially Romanesque, rectangular chancel, with a recessed five-sided closed apse from 1730, which serves as a side chapel.

The modern church building is a wide hall construction under a tent roof with a facade made of granite. The retracted wide sanctuary is in the north. The main portal in the south shows bronze reliefs by the sculptor Hannes Haslecker .

The inside of the church is a spacious hall with a remarkable wooden folding ceiling. The modern chancel, which is three steps higher, has a relief ceiling by the painter Heinrich Tahedl . The glass painting of the windows was done by the painter Albert Birkle . The window of St. Christophorus was created by the painter Robert Herfert .

The preserved old church building is three steps lower than a rectangular choir with square vaults between belts, which was connected to the former sacristy room, which was closed on three sides, during the renovation. The early Gothic chapel room is cross-vaulted with chamfered ribs with a rosette keystone from the second half of the 14th century.

Furnishing

The altar sculpture on the altar wall with the "face of Christ as a mask in a halo, below symbolically humanity" was created by the sculptor Alexander Silveri . To the right of it is a sculpture “A ship that calls itself a community” by Josef Elter. The lecture cross , the sediles and the baptismal font relief were created by the sculptor Josef Staud . The sculptor Josef Troyer created the Way of the Cross .

From the old church there are baroque figures Peter and Paul from the former high altar around 1738. In the old choir there is a rococo side altar. On the choir walls are the late baroque figures Antonius and Josef. Classicist candlesticks there too.

An early Gothic tombstone with a disc cross was assumed to be in the middle of the 13th century.

The organ was built by Gregor Hradetzky (1965). Gottlieb Jenichen calls a bell in 1867.
