Josef Troyer (born July 24, 1909 in Wallhorn , municipality of Prägraten , East Tyrol, † 1998 ) was an Austrian sculptor and painter .

Life

Even in elementary school, Troyer attracted attention with his original wood carvings and then attended the regional carving school in St. Jakob in Defereggen . At the age of 18 he received his first commission when Friedrich Funder had him carve a crucifix for the Herold publishing house in Vienna. With the support of Josef Schnitt, the rector of the Vienna Boys' Choir , who spent every summer with the boys in Hinterbichl and who recognized his talent, he was able to study in Vienna, first from 1929 to 1933 at the Kunstgewerbeschule Wien and then from 1934 to 1938 at the Academy of Fine Arts with Anton Hanak , Albert Bechtold and Ferdinand Andri . He has received several scholarships and prizes, including the master school award, and graduated from the master class in fresco painting.

After military service and imprisonment, he first returned to Prägraten and was able to use a room in the Virgen fire station as a workshop. Even when he lived in Vienna again, he remained connected to his East Tyrolean homeland through holidays and assignments. In Vienna he was involved with numerous tasks in the reconstruction of St. Stephen's Cathedral and became a cathedral sculptor. In 1952 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus . In the same year he married the Viennese teacher Gretl Helm in St. Stephen's Cathedral. From 1981 he lived in Prägraten for most of the year, but continued to work as an artist.

Troyer mainly created religious sculptures, especially cribs , as well as frescoes , paintings and woodcuts . He had exhibitions in Lienz, Vienna and Belgium.

Troyer was also an avid alpinist who climbed the Großvenediger more than a hundred times and the Großglockner more than fifty times.
