Camponotus consobrinus is a species of ant from the genus of the Ross ants ( Camponotus ) within the subfamily of the scale ants (Formicinae). She is originally from Australia. The additional species consobrinus , Latin for cousin , refers to some similarities to the black horse ant ( Camponotus herculeanus ).

features

The head of the workers is black to red-brown. Mesosoma and Petiolus are black to yellow with orange. The front part of the gaster is lighter than the rear part, with the rear part roughly the color of the head. Soldiers have strong muscles on their mandibles , so their heads are disproportionately wide. The erect setae are directed slightly forward, absent from the gula. The dorsal ones on the mesosoma are 0.3 to 0.5 mm long, 3 to 10 are on the propodeum , 5 to 20 on the mesosoma and 15 to 30 on the pronotum . Hair numerous and directed backwards on the gaster, less numerous, more upright and short on the head and mandibles. The setae on the scapus and tibia are short. The short setae (less than 0.2 mm) on the head and mesosoma lie close, the distance is greater than the seta length.

distribution

Camponotus consobrinus is common in south-eastern and eastern Australia.

Taxonomy

Camponotus consobrinus was first described in 1844 by the German entomologist Wilhelm Ferdinand Erichson under the name Formica consobrina . The German doctor , naturalist and entomologist Julius Roger placed the species in the genus of the horse ants ( Camponotus ) in 1863 .
