Julius August Roger (born February 23, 1819 in Niederstotzingen , Kingdom of Württemberg ; † January 7, 1865 near Rachowitz , Tost-Gleiwitz district ) was a German doctor , naturalist, entomologist , folklorist and collector of folk songs. In Upper Silesia alone , he has found and recorded over 400 new beetle species. He also collected several hundred folk songs, mostly from Upper Silesia and in Polish. A part was published in the work “Folksongs of the Oberschlesier” in 1863 in Breslau , which he dedicated to Duke Victor I of Ratibor . Roger was a friend and collaborator of the entomologist Ernst Gustav Kraatz .
Life
Roger studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University . Like Alois von Brinz and Hermann Lingg , he became a member of Corps Suevia Munich in 1839 . He remained connected to him throughout his life as a renonce philistine . He wrote his doctoral thesis with Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich at the Medical Clinic of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . In 1846 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD.
In 1847 Roger entered the service of the Duke of Ratibor, Duke Viktor Moritz Karl Friedrich zu Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst (1818-1893). The Duke's residence, Groß Rauden in Upper Silesia, became Rogers' place of activity from this point on. Under Duke Viktor I, he was appointed Royal Councilor. He convinced the Duke to build a modern hospital in Groß Rauden. He later campaigned for a new hospital to be built in Rybnik . He himself worked in the hospital in Pilchowitz .
Roger died on January 7, 1865 45 years ago during a hunt in Herzoglich Ratibor's forest on a stroke . The funeral took place on January 11th. Rogers grave is in Groß Rauden.
In memory of Julius Roger, Duke Viktor I had a memorial erected at the place where he died near Rachowitz. On May 26, 1865, the Julius Roger Foundation was established to support those in need.
