The peat scimitar moss ( Campylopus pyriformis ) is a small, very diverse moss from the Leucobryaceae family , which is often found in Central Europe.

The delicate, 0.5 to 3 cm high plants form dense, yellow-green colored lawns. They resemble the species Dicranodontium denudatum .
The leaves are lanceolate. The upper ones in particular are very narrow and elongated, slightly bent and drawn out into a long point. The lamina cells are irregularly rectangular. In the lower part of the leaf they are hyaline, translucent with thin cell walls, and elongated rectangular, in the upper part shorter and thicker. The leaf wing cells are only indistinctly differentiated.
The species reproduces vegetatively through egg-lanceolate brood leaves or rhizoid gems , sporogons are rather rare. The capsule is yellowish in color and has reddish peristome teeth that are split in half. The seta is yellow.
Distribution and location requirements
The moss grows in nutrient-poor, light-rich, always lime-free locations, for example on peat , rotten wood, or sandy soils. It is often to be found in raised bogs in poorly stepped areas together with Cephalozia connivens .
The moss grows in very different parts of the world: southeastern South America, western Europe including the Atlantic islands, central and South Africa, on Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands, in central Asia and in individual places in North America. It is believed that its original range was in South America and was carried away from there by humans and birds. It was probably introduced to Europe in the 17th or 18th century.
