Canaima is a Linux distribution with free software only and is based on Debian .
Venezuela has been promoting the use of free software in public institutions since 2004 . The " National Center for Information Technology (CNTI) " supports this goal with the development of its own Venezuelan Debian-based Linux variant Canaima GNU / Linux .
The installation - in Spanish - of the download file is possible in boot mode. A test report describes the installation and system startup as slow. After the installation, all OpenOffice programs are installed, as well as FreeMind , OpenProj and XChat . A Venezuela-Spanish dictionary is included and integrated into the programs.
In 2008, Classmate PCs were ordered from the Portuguese hardware manufacturer JP Sá Couto , which are shipped with this Linux. Today these PCs are manufactured as " Magellan " by Venezolana de Industrias Tecnológicas themselves. Because of this limited target hardware, Canaima relies on a monolithic kernel .
