history

Historic Hoover vacuum cleaner

The company was founded in New Berlin (now North Canton ) in the US state of Ohio in 1908 when William Henry "Boss" Hoover bought the patent for a vacuum cleaner from his cousin and inventor James Murray Spangler . Two years earlier, Spangler had made a vacuum cleaner out of a fan, a soap box, a pillowcase and a broomstick as a handle. The advantage was that this vacuum cleaner could be pulled through the apartment. The new product developed into a bestseller in the USA.

After the First World War, Hoover expanded to Europe. In Perivale , West London, the first European entry in the commercial register for Hoover was made as "Hoover Ltd." and in 1933 the first European manufacturing facility was opened. The vacuum cleaners had previously been exported to Europe from a factory in Canada. The first entry in the German commercial register in Berlin was made in 1926. In the same year, Hoover introduced the brush roller with knocking function. In 1927 the British Queen Mary declared Hoover purveyor to the court for vacuum cleaners by royal decree; later this award was extended to other household appliances. In 1937 the company was listed on the London Stock Exchange.

In the following decades, Hoover expanded the product range. Mark 1 came onto the market in 1951 as the first floor washing machine. It was small enough to fit in an average kitchen. The first fully automatic washing machine was presented in 1963, as was the first cylinder vacuum cleaner. In 1989 the company was acquired by the American competitor Maytag Corporation . In 1993, the company launched the Acenta, the quietest Hoover vacuum cleaner. The EcoBox , a plastic container in the vacuum cleaner, made the dust bag superfluous in 2001.

In 1995 the European offshoot of Hoover was taken over by the Italian manufacturer Candy, who thereby also secured extensive rights to use the brand in Europe and the Mediterranean region.

In 2006 Whirlpool acquired competitor Maytag; In 2007, the remaining America business of Hoover was taken over by the Chinese group Techtronic Industries (TTI).

Products

In the US core market, the Hoover brand is used exclusively for the “floorcare” segment (i.e. vacuum cleaners, sweepers, carpet cleaners, etc.). In parts of the English-speaking world, "Hoover" is a generalized brand name for vacuum cleaners. A wide range of kitchen and household electronics is offered under the brand on non-American markets.
