North Canton is a city in Stark County in the US state of Ohio not far from the city of Akron , which is populated by 17,411 inhabitants (as of 2015).

geography

The city is located north of Canton on a western arm of Nimishillen Creek in northeast Ohio. North Canton has an area of 15.7 km 2 , the urban area is predominantly on the east side of Interstate 77 between Canton and Akron. It belongs to a heavily populated area between Canton and Akron in the otherwise predominantly rural region of northeastern Ohio. A number of commercial and industrial establishments have settled along the interstate on either side, while further away there are extensive residential areas.

population

At the 2000 census , North Canton had 16,369 residents, nearly 97% of whom were white. The per capita income was $ 24,045. In addition to several elementary and middle schools, there is the Catholic private college Walsh University and the North Canton Hoover Highschool .

history

The place was founded in 1831 by mainly German immigrants as New Berlin . At the end of the First World War (1918) it got its current name.

In 1901 a tram , the Interurban Line , was opened between Canton and Akron, which also ran through North Canton and contributed to the economic development of the place because of the improved transport options. A short time later, James Murray Spangler (1848–1915), originally the owner of a tannery in town, invented a vacuum cleaner in 1907 , the Hoover vacuum cleaner. The family decided to give up the tannery business and founded the Hoover Company, which grew to become the world's largest vacuum cleaner manufacturer by the mid-1930s.

The company shaped the development of the city. Through donations, it made possible the construction of various public buildings - including the city library - and supported the construction of the Memorial Stadium , which was built in 1946 . Hoover High School, built in 1957, was named after the company.

In 1946, the Akron-Canton Regional Airport was opened northwest of the city , and in 1966 the last section of Interstate 77 between Canton and Akron was completed. As a result of the rapid development of automobile traffic, the population grew from around 3,500 to almost 15,000 between 1950 and 1970. For this reason, most of the schools that exist today were built during this period.

After TTI took over Hoover's America division in 2007, operations were shut down and the site sold. Today the Hoover Historical Center on the grounds of Walsh University commemorates the company's history .

economy

North Canton is economically well developed due to its good transport links. The Foreign Trade Zone , a special economic zone within which goods are not subject to American customs regulations , has a special status .

The former Hoover site is now owned by the Industrial Realty Group , who are converting it for multi-purpose use. Besides Hoover, other companies from North Canton are also of national importance, for example Diebold , a manufacturer of ATMs , has its headquarters in Canton. In addition, many other companies are based on site, and Walsh University is also a major employer.
