Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia promises the devil the soul of his son Cesare if he is elected Pope . Since Cesare's mother dies in childbirth, he is taken to a foster family, where his half-siblings Lucrezia , Juan and Jofre Borgia also live. In the vicinity of his new mother Vanozza di Catanei , the demons that otherwise swirl around the boy disappear. So he spent a relatively happy childhood, only the constant teasing of his half-brother Juan disturb his happiness.

But then Vannozza is forced to marry by Cardinal Rodrigo and the children have to get away from her. Among other things, Lucrezia is separated from Cesare, whom she loves. Cesare meets Michelotto, a famous murderer known to be unscrupulous, who is supposed to kill him. But he hesitates to kill the boy, and Cesare realizes that it has the same effect on him as Vanozza.

A few years later his father actually becomes Pope, now calling himself Alexander VI. Soon he appoints Cesare first bishop, then cardinal. But the latter is dissatisfied and does not understand why his brother Juan and not he has received the supreme command of the papal army. He weaves his web of intrigues and murders ever deeper in order to secure the pope's power.

Background information

In the manga, Cantarella is the poison that is in Cesare's blood. Anyone who comes into contact with his blood dies.

In fact, Cantarella is a vegetable arsenic compound, probably an arsenic acid, which has been used since the Carolingian period and was first described in 1380. The white powder was mostly used for assassinations, where it was valued for its effectiveness and ease of use. When the poison is administered, it does not matter how it gets into the body, and it does not have a strong taste of its own. Cantarella was popular during the Renaissance ; many powerful people used this poison to eliminate opponents, but especially through its use with the Borgia (about Alexander VI. ) it came into the notorious reputation as "Borgia poison".
