Subclass : Copepods (Copepoda)
Order : Harpacticoida
Family : Canthocamptidae
Genre : Canthocamptus
Type : Canthocamptus tasmaniae
Scientific name
Canthocamptus tasmaniae
Chappuis , 1951

Canthocamptus tasmaniae is in Australia endemic occurring crustacean . The species belongs to the copepods and lives in fresh water.

features

Canthocamptus tasmaniae , like all species of Harpacticoida, has short first antennae. The second antennae fork into two short branches each. A joint that makes the body flexible lies between the fourth and fifth segments. The abdomen is relatively wide and flat. The males are 0.5 millimeters long, the females 0.6 millimeters. The length can vary as the segments can be telescoped into one another.

Occurrence

The copepod was discovered by AG Nicholls around 1950 in the thick moss on the rock walls of the Guide River waterfalls in northwest Tasmania around 12 km southwest of Burnie . It can still be found here and in the surrounding area. It is believed that the range used to be larger when there were more wetlands in Australia and Tasmania and fewer large areas completely dried out in the Australian summer. Because of its small range, the species has been classified as endangered by the IUCN .

Way of life

Like most of its close relatives, Canthocamptus tasmaniae does not live in open water, but in plants or in foliage on moist soils. It occurs mainly in the thick moss that hangs from the rock walls behind waterfalls. One specimen was found in the damp foliage of the beech forests . The species seems to be dependent on constant humidity all year round. No permanent stages were found, such as in the species Canthocamptus staphylinus , which occurs in European lakes . There is also no evidence of parthenogenetic reproduction; both females and males have always been observed in the habitat of Canthocamptus tasmaniae .

Taxonomy and systematics

Canthocamptus tasmaniae was of PA Chappuis 1951 as Attheyella (Delachauxiella) tasmaniae described . The type specimen can no longer be found, so that in 1987 a neoholotype (female) and a neoallotype (male) were determined by R. Hamond, which had been collected at the type locality Guide River Waterfalls.

The genus Canthocamptus comprises more than 200 species, of which 21 species are endemic to Australia, mostly restricted to small areas. Two other species were introduced into Australia by water birds. Canthocamptus tasmaniae was placed in the Canthocamptus fimbriatus family by R. Hamond in 1987 , to which, in addition to C. fimbriatus and C. tasmaniae , C. henryae , C. lacinulatus , C. echinopyge , C. longifurca , C. globulisetosus , C. mortoni , C. timmsi , C. dedeckkeri , C. clavifurcatus and C. caecosetosus can be counted.
