Castilian Cañamel ) is a small holiday resort on the east coast of the Balearic island of Mallorca , six kilometers south of Cala Rajada and not far from the stalactite caves Coves d'Artà . Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Capdepera .
Canyamel (description
The name is derived from a concession for sugar cane cultivation (Spanish caña de miel , Catalan canya de mel ; literally: cane made of honey; Canya = cane, Mel = honey) that John II (Aragón) gave to the local landowner in 1428 granted.
Canyamel is surrounded on both sides by wooded, 200 to 300 meter high hills, which open to the southwest into the Cap des Pinar o des Raix , and to the northeast, where the stalactite caves are, into the Cap Vermell .
The Torrent de Canyamel flows through the middle of Canyamel and divides the village into the touristy southern half with hotels, the pedestrian zone and the Torre de Canyamel and the sophisticated northern half at Cap Vermell, in which the golf course and the Coves d ' Artà are located. The bridge over the Torrente was renovated and completed in June 2008.
The town's fine sandy beach, Platja de Canyamel , is around 300 meters long and is particularly popular in the summer season.
Attractions
- The Torre de Canyamel on a square floor plan with three floors is a massive crenellated defense tower from the 13th century, which presumably dates from the time of Jaumes I , but may have been built on older Moorish foundations. Originally it was called Torre de Montsó and was only renamed in the 15th century in the course of sugar cane cultivation. It served as an escape and defense tower to ward off pirates. Today there is a small museum and a restaurant there.
- The Artà caves ( Coves d'Artà ) are the largest stalactite caves in Mallorca, they are also signposted as Coves de Canyamel .
- At the golf course, a half-hour ascent into the rocky slopes leads to the prehistoric Talaiot settlement of Es Claper des Gegants , located between olive trees . Only a few foundation walls have been excavated from the settlement, which was only uncovered in 1998, which, in contrast to Ses Païsses near Artà , have not yet been didactically prepared with information material as of 2005.
golf
Shortly before the northern entrance to Canyamel is the 18-hole golf course, opened in 1988, which José "Pepe" Gancedo built in the foothills of the Puig Negre (Serra Mitjana) with the aim of interfering as little as possible with the nature of Mallorca. The fairways classified as difficult with sloping greens stretch between palm, fig and almond trees.
Other golf courses in the Llevant region are located at Capdepera and Son Servera .
