Origin of name

The Cape was named after the British navigator and explorer Captain James Cook on October 31, 1769 , when Māori boats approached the Endeavor with possibly hostile intent and Cook ordered a cannon shot over their heads. The Māori fled and Cook called the cape " Runaway " (to run away).
