Cape Surprise ( English for Cape Surprise ) is a cape on the Dufek coast in the Antarctic Ross Dependency . At the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf , it marks the northern end of the Longhorn Spurs between the Massam and Barrett glaciers .
The southern group of a campaign from 1963 to 1964 as part of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition named it because, to their surprise, they first encountered sandstone layers of the so-called Beacon Supergroup from the Triassic and the Ferrar Supergroup from the Jurassic .
