Capheaton Hall is a country house near Wallington Hall in the English county of Northumberland . The property is the seat of the Swinburne Baronets ; there the poet Algernon Swinburne grew up . Capheaton Hall is considered one of Northumberland's most important aristocratic residences. English Heritage has listed the house as a Grade I Historic Building.

The house, built for Sir John Swinburne, 1st Baronet , in 1667 and 1668 by Robert Trollope of Newcastle upon Tyne , is a provincial piece of baroque , built from local stone, with huge pillars on high plinths that support the Supporting sections of the entablature dividing the entrance facade into a wide, central yoke and flanking yokes under a sloping roof with traditional, flat-based dormers . A Gothic- style model farm designed by Daniel Garrett for Sir John Swinburne was added to the property around 1746 , one of the earliest examples of Gothic Revival . The north facade of the house designed the local architect William Newton 1798-1790 for Sir John Swinburne, 6th Baronet .

The house is in rolling parkland in the style of Capability Brown . The naturalistic facility of Sir Edward's Lake south of the house was declared a '' Site of Nature Conservation Importance '' in 1983. The reason for this was the overwintering and breeding wild ducks that it houses, and the bog and scrub forest vegetation that has developed in its bank areas.

The street village of Capheaton (50 inhabitants), which was planned as a model village at the end of the 18th century, is located on a chain of hills west of the country house.

The archives of Capheaton Hall are now in the Northumberland Record Office .
