history

On March 25, 1912, the company was founded as the “Vorarlberger Strohhutfabrik” in the Bregenz Forest, where large straw hats for making hay and the traditional black traditional hats for women (“Schäohüte”) were made in the region.

In 1938 the Sommer brothers from Stuttgart took over the factory. In the 1960s, the name was changed to "hat factory" and paper, felt and hay hats were produced. Since 1971 hats and fashionable cloth caps have been produced under the brand name "Capo".

As an outfitter for the Austrian national ski team in the successful 1970s, the company gained media presence and international recognition.

In 1989 the factory was taken over by Doppelmayr and Michael Doppelmayr was managing director for two years. The company was soon sold to the Swiss company Wunderlich & Sonderegger . After the company went bankrupt in 1998, Markus Kopf and Bertold Bischof continued operations in a newly constructed building in Egg (Melisau). the parent company was sold to Sutterlüty Handels GmbH and production was relocated from Egg to Chemnitz in 1998.

On July 1, 2015, the company was sold to Strickmoden Bruno Barthel from Chemnitz (Germany), which is the market leader in the field of baby and children's hats in Germany with its maximo brand.
