features

These are animals with a stretched, rather flat-backed physique. The lower mouth has a pair of barbels on the upper jaw, one species and some subpopulations have another pair. The upper lip is very thin, while the lower lip is either completely absent or limited to the corners of the mouth. A horn-covered cutting edge sits on the lower jaw. The pharynx are arranged in three rows, with four to five teeth in the first row. The two to four teeth of the second and the two teeth of the third row are approximately cylindrical. In the transcaucasian species 14 to 33 short brachio spines sit on the gill arches , in the other species the gill trap is formed from 12 to 33 spines. The gill opening is relatively large. The dorsal fin sits centrally on the back, the caudal fin is clearly notched. The entire body is covered with firmly anchored scales , which are drawn with diverging grooves. 37 to 100 scales sit along the straight and complete sideline, the Transcaucasian species have 48 to 80 scales here.

Systematics

The genus Capoeta belongs to the subfamily Cyprininae . The genus has been widely discussed, with some authors using the genus name for a subgenus or section of the genus Puntius . At times, some researchers viewed Capoeta as a synonym for the African genus Varicorhinus . The only synonym for Capoeta is Scaphiodon . There is currently no consensus on the number of valid species, as a number of predominantly allopatric species are considered by some authors to be subspecies of Capoeta capoeta .
