Caraguatay is a city and a district in the Cordillera department in Paraguay , 95 km from Asunción in the foothills of the Yvytyrapy Mountains. The district has about 13,800 inhabitants. The place name from the Guaraní means "river of wild pineapples".

history

The place was founded on September 24, 1770 by the brothers Fermín José María and Deogracio Franco. In 1872, shortly after the end of the Triple Alliance War (1865–1870), the first city administration was constituted. Around this time, Lebanese and Syrian families also settled there, fleeing from Turkish domination in their homeland. Paradoxically, the streets in which they still live today are known as the “Turkish Quarter” ( acera de los turcos ). In 1927 the city was elevated to a second category district.

emigration

Around 1966, a great wave of Caraguatay emigration to the United States began . They entered on a tourist visa, but 98% of them stayed there as immigrants, according to Mayor Blas Añazco. In recent years, however, emigration has come to a standstill as the USA no longer issues visas to residents of Caraguatay. Young people are now drawn to Caacupé and other cities in Paraguay. A lot of handsome houses have been built in the city from the transfers from the emigrants and it makes an extremely well-kept impression.

economy

The main industries are agriculture and livestock. Tobacco, cotton, rice, corn, peanuts, beans, sugar cane, bananas and citrus fruits are grown. There are food processing companies as well as wood processing and charcoal production.

Vapor Cué ship museum

The open-air ship museum is located 4 km from the city center in the Vapor Cué National Park on the Río Yhaguy . On this river, which was navigable in earlier times, the last six ships of the Paraguayan Navy fled after the capital fell at the end of the Triple Alliance War. However, they got stuck in the sand. In order not to let them fall into the hands of the opponents, they were partially burned and sunk on August 18, 1869 on the orders of Marshal Francisco Solano López . In 1978 the artillery pieces and sunken ships began to be recovered and exhibited in a museum.
