The Caraiman peak is a 2384  m high peak in the Bucegi Mountains ( Munții Bucegi ) in the Romanian Southern Carpathians (Carpații Meridionali) . In the eastern mountain range of the Transylvanian Alps , the mountain is one of the highest, known for the Crucea Eroilor monument (in German: Heldenkreuz ), under the summit of which is the small town of Buşteni in the northeast of the Prahova district.

The Crucea Eroilor Monument

The Crucea Eroilor monument, a 31 meters high and 15 meters wide cross which stands on a 8.3 meter high base near the caraiman peak, ( ) is situated at an altitude of 2291  m and is under preservation. The memorial was erected from 1926 to 1928 and, according to various sources, is dedicated to the fallen soldiers from the Prahova Valley in the First World War or, since it was inaugurated on September 14, 1928, to the Exaltation of the Cross ( Ziua Sfintei Cruci ). At the time of the Socialist Republic, the side arms of the cross were to be dismantled and a red star was to be put on.

Because of the nearby cable car station, about two hours away, and its viewpoint over the Prahova Valley, the monument is a tourist attraction. The cross is also equipped with light bulbs so that it can also be seen at night. It has been included in the Guinness Book of Records since 2013, making it the largest summit cross of its kind in the world.
