Carassius is a genus of the carp family . Their original range is difficult to reconstruct due to repeated introduction to other regions. Today the five species are distributed almost throughout the Palearctic and can be found from Europe to the Arctic watershed of Siberia and in the temperate and warm parts of East Asia.

They are small and medium-sized fish with a shape typical of carp fish. The body is stretched and laterally compressed, and with old age an increasing height develops. A back or stomach keel is missing. The mouth is terminal and has no barbels. The long dorsal fin is supported by three to four undivided and 14 to 20 divided soft rays. The anal fin is short and has two to three undivided and five to six, rarely seven, divided soft rays. Carassius species have a row of pharyngeal teeth , each of which has four laterally flattened teeth. There are 21 to 38 scales firmly anchored in the skin along the full, straight lateral line .
