Carboranes

Carboranes (English: Carboranes or Carbaboranes ) are boranes in which one or more boron atoms have been replaced by carbon atoms, for example the air-stable B 10 C 2 H 12 . Carboranes also form anions , such as the dicarbollide B 9 C 2 H 11 2− , which in turn form stable complexes with metal ions. Such complexes, a very large number of which have already been characterized, are often good catalysts , for example for the hydrogenation reaction.

The molecular structures found in carboranes are similar to those found in boranes. One can predict and understand them with the help of Wade's rules . A common structural element is the icosahedron or an icosahedron section.

Manufacturing

There are a multitude of ways of representing it, a widely used possibility is the reaction of a borane with ethyne in the heat or in a silent electrical discharge. Other possibilities are the pyrolysis of methyl borane and the Brellochs reaction .

Carboranoic acid

The fluorinated carboranic acid (formula H (CHB 11 F 11 )) is the strongest super acid produced to date , it is even stronger than the chlorinated variant H (CHB 11 Cl 11 ). The compound was released in 2014. The acid is able to protonate isobutane at room temperature.
