Basic classification

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The (Dutch) basic classification (nl: Nederlandse basisclassificatie , BK or NBC ) is a hierarchical classification system developed by Dutch libraries that was specially developed for academic work.

The classification was introduced in the late 1980s under the direction of the Royal Library of the Netherlands and has been in use since 1990. Since then it has been reworked again and again. The BK is mainly used in the Netherlands and in the Common Library Network (GBV) . The Austrian Library Association has also been using the basic classification as an additional scheme for subject indexing since 2009 .

target

The aim of the basic classification was originally in three parts.

  • Classification and categorization of scientific publications according to research areas
  • Search function and topic decoding of books and journals by academic libraries
  • Coordination of the collection in the Dutch academic libraries

In practice, the basic classification is used in conjunction with a word system consisting of keywords, hints of place and time, genre and the author's name.

development

The BK was developed in cooperation with several academic libraries. A first version of the BK was only partially automated and was introduced from 1990. The German-language editions followed from 1992 through the PICA project Lower Saxony / subject indexing project group and then the specialist working group subject indexing of the Lower Saxony Library Association (GBV).
