Cardinal Lemoine is an underground station on line 10 of the Paris Métro .

location

The station is located in the Saint-Victor district of the 5th arrondissement of Paris . It lies lengthways under the Rue Monge.

Surname

The metro station is named after the Rue du Cardinal Lemoine, which crosses Rue Monge. Jean Lemoine (1250-1313) was a cardinal and, as a papal legate, the Pope's representative in France. In 1302 he founded the Collège, later named after him, near the Sorbonne , which was destroyed during the French Revolution .

History and description

Access on the west side of Rue Monge

The station was put into operation on April 26, 1931. On that day, the route was changed: after the completion of the underpassing of the Seine , line 7 was able to take over the section from Place Monge to Porte de Choisy , which had been used by line 10 until then . Line 10 ran from Maubert - Mutualité via Cardinal Lemoine and Jussieu to the new terminus at Gare d'Austerlitz .

The station has two side platforms on two main tracks. It has an elliptical cross-section, the ceiling and walls are tiled. There are two entrances, both of which are at the intersection of Rue Monge and Rue du Cardinal Lemoine. The east entrance is adorned by a candelabra designed by Adolphe Dervaux in the Art Deco style .

To the south of the station, the tracks swivel to the southeast under the Rue des Boulangers. Directly under the station are two operating tracks coming from Maubert - Mutualité in the direction of Place Monge, which from January 15, 1930 as main tracks to the section Place Monge - Place d'Italie (from March 7, 1930 to Porte de Choisy) served.
