Careproctus is a species-rich genus from the fish family of the bellies (Liparidae). Careproctus species live in cool and moderately tempered seas, especially in the northern and southern Atlantic and Pacific, as well as in the Southern Ocean(about 50 species) mostly at greater depths (up to 5500 meters). One species, the pointed-tailed disc belly ( Careproctus reinhardti ), also occurs in the North Sea.

features

Careproctus species reach body lengths of 5 to 50 cm, the largest species, Careproctus rotundifrons , is over a meter long. A suction disk formed from the ventral fins is present, but in some species it is very small. There is only one nostril on each side of the head. The teeth are simple or three-pointed and usually arranged in numerous rows. Pseudobranchs are missing. The number of vertebrae is 35 to 64, of which 8 to 12 are in the abdomen . The posterior abdominal vertebrae carry abdominal ribs, which can sometimes also be reduced. The number of pyloric tubes is 3 to 16, in rare cases they can be missing. The small caudal fin has 4 to 10 main fin rays and never more than 4 minor fin rays. The hypuralia are complex and have grown together in different ways. The pectoral fins usually have fewer rays than the anal fin and can have a lower lobe, but it can also be absent. The indentation between the lobes is variable.
