The pointed-tailed disc belly ( Careproctus reinhardti ) is a species of fish from the family of the disc bellies (Liparidae). It occurs in the Arctic Laptev , Kara and Barents Seas and in the Northern European Sea . A single specimen was also found off Labrador and Newfoundland as well as in the Skagerrak .

features

The pointed-tailed disc belly becomes 30 cm long. The fish are teardrop-shaped with an almost pointed tail and pink in color, without any spots or patterns. They have 59 to 63 vertebrae. The lateral line organ consists only of head pores. There is only one nostril on each side of the head. The lower section of the pectoral fins is 1.3 to 2.4 times longer than the upper. There is a pocket-like fold of skin in front of the symphysis of the pectoral fins. The long cleft gill extends to the lower part of the pectoral fin base. The suction disk formed by the pelvic fins is small and at most as large as the diameter of the eye.

Fin formula: dorsal 53–57, anal 47–51.

Way of life

The pointed-tailed disc belly lives at water temperatures of −2 to +4 ° C on and above muddy seabeds at depths of 75 to 1750 meters and is relatively common. It feeds on bottom-dwelling and pelagic crustaceans and smaller fish. The females lay about 300 eggs that are 4.5 mm in diameter.
