Carina Edlinger (born August 13, 1998 in Bad Ischl ) is an Austrian disabled athlete. She starts in para-cross-country skiing .

Career

Edlinger, who attended the Schladming Ski Academy, started skiing in 2008 as a 10-year-old.

As a sighted athlete, she won the national championship in cross-country skiing with the Austrian relay.

After falling ill with Stargardt's disease (rare genetic defect in the retinal area) during puberty and progressive blindness, she started as a guide with parallel cross-country skiing in 2015 together with her two years younger brother Julian, who himself completed the Nordic training center in Eisenerz as a cross-country skier. In her first season she was the first Austrian to win a cross-country gold medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships for the disabled in Finsterau in the skating sprint, with her brother Julian as a guide. In total, she won two golds and one bronze.

In the end, Carina was able to secure the overall World Cup victory of the 2016/17 season.

On March 17, 2018, the 19-year-old and her brother Julian won the bronze medal over 7.5 km in the classic style for the visually impaired at the Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang .

Today she lives in Fuschl am See ( Salzburg ) and is in a relationship with the Norwegian parallax runner Eirik Bye .
