The Cariz Point (English; in Chile Cabo Cariz , in Argentina Cabo Agrelo ) is a headland on the northwest coast of Nelson Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It marks the western limit of the entrance from Drakestrasse into Fildes Strait .
Chilean scientists named it after Heriberto Cariz Cárcamo, a crew member of the Yelcho in the rescue of the men stranded on Elephant Island in the endurance expedition (1914-1917) led by the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton . The headland was discovered by Argentine scientists during an expedition from 1972 to 1973. In Argentina she is since 1978 after the Argentine lawyer and journalist Pedro Agrelo (1776–1846), an activist of the independence of Argentina.
