Carl Bergsten had his own architecture office from 1904 to 1935. His early works are still characterized by radical Vienna architecture. A series of works in his hometown of Norrköping, where he a. a. designed the exhibition building for the 1906 Art and Industry Exhibition. The heavy brick architecture changes with his work after 1910, e.g. For example, the elegant, small church in Enskede from 1913 and the art gallery Liljevalchs Konsthall on Djurgården , where he won the architecture competition in 1913. This building, which was completed in March 1916, is generally considered to be the breakthrough in modern architecture in Sweden.

Bergsten also followed the new artistic style ideal in Sweden and his other works reflect the Swedish classicism of the 1920s, christened Swedish grace abroad . This includes the Swedish pavilion at the 1925 Paris World Exhibition and the interior of the luxury liner M / S Kungsholm . One of his last works, the City Theater in Gothenburg , shows that Bergström never completely switched to functionalism, like many of his colleagues, but tried to combine the old with the new.
