Carl Fingerhuth (born March 14, 1936 in Zurich ) is a Swiss architect , planner and publicist. From 1979 to 1992 he was a cantonal master builder in Basel .

Education and employment

Carl Fingerhuth studied architecture at the ETH Zurich . After graduating in 1960, he went to Egypt , where he worked at the Swiss Institute for Egyptian Building Research and Archeology in Cairo . He then worked in Zurich for two years before opening his own office for spatial planning and urban development there in 1964. Before he was elected as the cantonal master builder of Basel-Stadt in 1979, he developed projects in Switzerland, France, Nigeria, Austria and Spain, including 1974–79 the capital planning of the Nigerian federal state Imo in Owerri .

As a cantonal master builder, Fingerhuth saw himself as a builder, whose task also consisted of promoting culture and young talent by announcing open building competitions or promoting them to private builders. In this way, many young offices were able to achieve responsible projects early on. From this time on he was also a professor at various universities: he was visiting professor at Virginia State University in 1981 and 1986 , at the University of Strasbourg from 1993 to 1994 , from 1995 to 2000 in Darmstadt (since then honorary professor) and from 2005 to 2007 in Genoa , as well as teaching assignments at the ETH Zurich and in Geneva . Fingerhuth was also invited to many competition juries himself. After his engagement in political office, he resumed his planning and consultancy work in urban development projects in 1992 and, in addition to his expert and jury work, also increasingly appeared as a publicist who critically followed the development of Switzerland.
