Carl Friedrich Bückling (born August 23, 1756 in Neuruppin , † February 22, 1812 in Berlin ) was a German inventor . He constructed the first steam engine of Wattscher type in the Kingdom of Prussia .

Life

His parents were the businessman Christian Heinrich Bückling and his wife Charlotte Wilhelmine Schönfus . In 1762 he moved to Berlin with his parents' family , where he began an apprenticeship as a building craftsman after graduating from school and then attended the Freiberg Mining Academy. In 1768 he got a position in the Prussian Mining and Huts Department of the General, Upper Finance, War and Domain Directory in Berlin.

On April 23, 1778, on behalf of King Friedrich II of Prussia , his minister Friedrich Anton von Heynitz gave him the order to travel to England together with the Oberbergrat Freiherr Waitz von Eschen and there the construction of the Wattsch steam engine and its effect and to explore costs and make appropriate cracks to compare this fire machine with others of its kind. In May both began their journey to Birmingham .

On October 28, 1779, Bückling was appointed hut construction inspector. In this function he was responsible for the construction of the Prussian iron works. In February 1781 he was promoted to mountain assessor. As such, he was transferred to Hettstedt on June 1, 1783 as head of the steam engine .

After Heynitz had sent Bückling to England a second time, he was able to draw up precise plans for his own steam engine based on the Wattschen model with the help of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . A reduced, functional model was built by 1783, from then on the parts were manufactured and assembled in their original size. On August 23, 1785, the first German steam engine Wattscher was officially put into operation on the König-Friedrich-Schacht near Burgörner .

Due to the great success of his steam engine, he was awarded an honorary order on behalf of the Prussian king. In 1791 he was appointed Oberbergrat. Due to his special knowledge, he was given the management of mechanical engineering in the mining and smelting department. During the French occupation, Bückling was appointed chief engineer of the machine management of the Elbe division of the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1809 . At his own request, Bückling retired in 1812 at the age of 55. He died a little later.

In 1890, the Association of German Engineers inaugurated the machine monument for the “first German steam engine” on the König-Friedrich-Schacht in Burgörner near Hettstedt in honor of Carl Friedrich Bückling .

He married Henriette Albertine Schartow , the daughter of the secret secretary Daniel Bartholomäus Schartow . The couple had two children:

  • Adolph (1793-1830)
  • Emilie Bückling (November 29, 1795 - January 1, 1867) ∞ Johann Christian Julian Reil (April 20, 1792 - August 31, 1858), son of Johann Christian Reil

His son Adolph (1793-1830) also worked in the mining industry. After Adolph took part in the 1813/14 campaigns as a soldier, he became a 24-year-old mountain master in 1817, then in 1822 chief mountain master for the Prussian mining authority in Eisleben. In 1830 he died as Oberbergrat, according to the files of the Oberbergrat Halle, at the age of only 37.
