Carl Gotthelf Praetorius

Carl Gotthelf Praetorius (born February 10, 1763 in Thorn , Polish Prussia , † September 9, 1832 in Thorn, Province of West Prussia , Kingdom of Prussia ) was Council President of Thorn and regional historian.

Life

The father Nathanael Praetorius was mayor of Thorn, the mother Katharina Geret a sister of the scholar Samuel Luther Geret . Carl Gotthelf Praetorius was council secretary in Thorn from 1787. In 1790 he received his doctorate in philology in Wittenberg .

He later became head of the law firm in Thorn. In 1803 Praetorius was elected a member of the city council, but was not confirmed by the new Prussian authorities. Not until March 1807 was he appointed a member of the magistrate by the French authorities. In October of that year he became Council President (President of the City Council). During this time he had to deal with the considerable economic and financial burdens on the city from the French occupation situation. On January 1, 1809, he was replaced.

Praetorius was a member of the Municipal Council and was a member ( Deputirter ) of the circle for the Reichstag in 1809, 1811 and 1812. Even after the Prussian reconquest of the city in 1815 remained Praetorius City Council to the 1820th
