Carl Hinrich Griese (born September 21, 1857 in Hamburg ; † May 19, 1933 there ) was a German lithographer , photographer, publisher and printer owner.

Life

The son of a locksmith completed an apprenticeship in lithography and then went via Leipzig to Karlsruhe, where he attended the art academy there alongside his job . In 1880 he returned to Hamburg and founded his own print shop (first on Rödingsmarkt , later on the corner of Steintwiete and Deichstraße ). a. Produced art prints, including works by his school friend Christian Wilhelm Allers , as well as nautical charts for the Deutsche Seewarte and posters for Hapag .

In 1886 he was one of the founders of the Kunstgewerbe-Verein , today's Justus Brinckmann Society , which made him an honorary member in 1930.

Together with the engineer Joseph Rader and the businessman Christel Föge, Griese developed one of the first functional photo booths , which was registered for a patent in 1889 and presented in the same year at the Hamburg trade fair. Griese also took photos himself and published a series of photo books with Hamburg street scenes and landscape shots, e.g. B. from the Vier- und Marschlanden .

Griese died in 1933 and was buried in the family grave at Ohlsdorf cemetery (grave location P14 / 473-475).
After his death, his son Carl Siegmund Griese (1900–1972) continued the business.
