Carl Henry Brans (born December 13, 1935 in Dallas ) is an American theoretical physicist .

Carl H. Brans studied at Loyola University in New Orleans (Bachelor 1957) and received his doctorate in 1961 from Princeton University under Robert Henry Dicke . The subject of the dissertation was a modification of the general theory of relativity now known as Brans-Dicke's theory . Brans later turned to fundamental questions in quantum logic as well as in numerical simulation of general relativity. Since 1992 he has been dealing with the topological peculiarities in 4-dimensional manifolds , which are known under the term "Exotic Smoothness". Brans became an instructor at Loyola University in 1960, where he received a full professorship in theoretical physics in 1970 . In 1973/74 he was visiting professor at Princeton University and since 1993 he was visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study . Brans has been retired since 2008.

He has been married since 1957 and has four children.
