Carl Hahne was the eldest son of Justus Hahne and Christiane Sprenger, known as Bruns. His father was a merchant and art dealer in Hanover, supplier to the royal Hanover court for handmade paper , sealing wax and writing utensils. Carl Hahne married Aurelie Jünger (born September 29, 1852 in Kemberg, † March 19, 1921 in Dessau) with whom he had three children. Hahne took over his father's business as the royal Hanoverian court supplier for handmade paper and sealing wax (one of the oldest sealing wax factories in northern Germany).

Around 1880 Hahne ran a "paper & art dealership" through which he sold, for example, photographs in the format of a carte de visite . It has not yet been clarified whether he took the photos himself or sold prints of works by still unidentified photographers.

In 1886, Hahne also bought the oldest paper factory in Germany, the paper mill in Relliehausen (Dassel) founded in 1584 . Since then, Hahne has continued the factory under the name Hahnemühle .
