Carl Hiekisch

Carl Wilhelm Hiekisch (* March 3, July / March 15,  1840 greg. In Reval in the governorate of Estonia , Russian Empire ; † December 7, July / December 20,  1901 greg. In Reval) was a German-Baltic geographer and ethnologist .

Life

Hiekisch grew up as the son of the brewer Joseph Hiekisch from Bohemia and his wife Juliane Wilhelmine, born in Reval. Schneider, in Reval and attended the grammar school in St. Petersburg from 1853 to 1857 and 1857 to 1858, where he studied natural sciences from 1858 to 1860. There he became an honorary Philistines German Teutonia - frat appointed. 1867 candidate; 1879 Magister. In 1882, he was from the Imperial University of Tartu with the work "The system of the Urals" A orographic representation of European-Asian border mountains "" Dr. phil. (Geography) PhD. He was married to Charlotte Marie Julie Daugull. In St. Petersburg he taught the German language at the 2nd grammar school from 1867-69. From 1869 to 1897 Hiekisch worked as a geography teacher at the St. Annen School. It is listed in the publication “To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the St. Anne's School”. From 1870 to 1900 he was also a teacher of natural history and geography at the St. Katharinen School.

He traveled through Scandinavia, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, as well as to the West Indies and South America.
