Carl Leslie Withner

Carl Leslie Withner (born March 3, 1918 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † February 8, 2012 in Bellingham , Washington ) was an American botanist and orchid researcher. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Withner ".

Life

Withner studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . He received his master's degree in botany from Yale University , where he also received his PhD. He then taught at Brooklyn College . He was a curator at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for 27 years (1948–75). He was then a curator at the New York Botanical Gardens (1975–79). After his emeritus state, Withner moved to Bellingham.

Orchids

Withner's interest in the world of plants began when he was still at school. His interest in orchids was aroused during his studies by Harry J. Fuller. From 1961 he traveled to the tropics, where he examined and described many orchids. 35 orchid hybrids were crossed and registered by him. He has described 11 species of orchids.

Withner is known for his research on the cultivation of vanilla from seeds. His book The Orchids, a Scientific Survey (1959) is still considered a standard work in scientific orchid research.
