Life

Harbert was Landpfennigmeister in the Duchy of Westphalia from 1795 to 1816 . This made him the chief responsible for taxes and duties in the duchy in the service of the estates . Until secularization he was also in the rank of court councilor in the service of Kurköln and after 1802 in the service of Hesse-Darmstadt . In addition, Harbert was Mayor of Arnsberg between 1796 and 1798. After the duchy passed to Prussia , Harbert was rendant of the institute's chancellery in 1816 and 1817.

In addition to his job, he was also a pomologist. Around 1830 he found the apple variety Harberts Renette named after him , which is also called the monastery apple and is still widespread in Germany today. In the 19th century, its cultivation was often recommended for planting. The variety was particularly widespread in Saxony , Thuringia and southern Germany .

Harbert is buried in the Eichholzfriedhof in Arnsberg. It is customary for some apples to be placed on the grave every All Saints Day .

On the initiative of Karl Föster , a tree with Harberts Renette was replanted in 1993 in the garden of the former Landpfennigmeisterhaus in Hallenstrasse .
